Living

Managing at Home

Learning to live with dementia at home can be difficult for the person and their family circle. We have developed a Managing at Home section which offers suggestions on how to alleviate some of the more common challenges.

Medicines

GPs and other Health Professionals may prescribe medicines as part of a treatment management plan. Medicines will typically be tailored for an individual’s circumstances, often termed ‘personalised medicine – click here for more information on types of medicine.

Therapy

Therapy can play a significant role in the person’s management plan and does not involve medicine. There are five main types of therapy which you can read about here.

Professional Care

Professional care can begin from pre-diagnosis stage and will continue through to end of life care. When living at home Domiciliary Care may be an option for the person and their family circle. Typical care packages may include:-

  • Personal and continence care
  • Managing medication
  • Helping to mobilise in and around the home
  • Household tasks and meal preparation
  • Clinical care, including catheter and stoma management and PEG feeding

Domiciliary care may be available through your local Health Trust. It is also available privately should person’s with dementia and their family circle’s wish to avail of these services.

If living at home is no longer viable, the person with dementia will likely move into and live within a care home setting.
